PhysOrg highlighted the news that an interdisciplinary research team led by Syracuse University has won a $2 million EFRI grant from the National Science Foundation.

Fortune mentioned the $1 million donation from Walmart to the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) for efforts of job creation and preparation for veterans. The Sacramento Bee, Marketwatch, the Salt Lake Tribune and the American Forces Press Service reported on the expansion of EBV, founded at the Whitman School of Management and operated by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), to the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. The stories also reported on U.S. Small Business Administration programs focused on encouraging vets to grow and expand small businesses. Mike Haynie, executive director of IVMF and Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Whitman School, is quoted. In addition, the IVMF-operated and Whitman-founded programs EBV, V-WISE and Operation Endure & Grow were mentioned in a Federal News Radio report on a Department of Defense push for new opportunities for service members and wounded veterans who are now returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan to receive business training.

The Albany Times-Union reported on a self-employment forum for people with disabilities, co-sponsored by the Burton Blatt Institute.

YNN covered Monday evening’s candlelight vigil at Hendricks Chapel to honor and remember the 35 Syracuse University students who died aboard Pan Am Flight 103.

The Post-Standard previewed the Orange Central event on Saturday, Nov. 12 that features the Hon. Joanne Alper ’72 and Charles Gardner Geyh discussing judicial ethics and the role that elected officials, interest groups and the media play in judicial independence. Also, Syracuse.com highlighted alumni authors returning for an Orange Central book-signing event Saturday at the SU Bookstore including Taye Diggs, Scott Pitoniak and others.

The Post-Standard reported on revitalization efforts in the Near Westside neighborhood and highlighted construction on the new WCNY and Pro-Literacy Worldwide headquarters. The Near Westside Initiative is mentioned in the article.

The Post-Standard reported on the “The Molting of Walt” public sculpture presentation by Brendan Rose, Syracuse public artist in residence. “Walt” will be located at West Fayette and Walton streets in Syracuse’s Armory Square.

Lauren Shallish, a Ph.D. student in disability studies and the cultural foundations of education at the School of Education, authored a Post-Standard opinion column on the 40th anniversary of Syracuse University’s Center for Human Policy, Law and Disability Studies.

Birdhouses built by Randall Korman, School of Architecture associate dean and professor, are featured in a Saturday Post-Standard story.

A Syracuse New Times report (third item) previewed SU drama students’ participation in the “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and highlighted the Syracuse Stage open house. Jeffrey Woodward, managing director of Syracuse Stage, and Lauren Unbekant, Syracuse Stage director of educational outreach and a part-time College of Visual and Performing Arts instructor in drama, were quoted.

Election day coverage by S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications journalism students for a Democracy in Action project in Onondaga County was noted by Syracuse.com.

Syracuse University students Luis Romo and Nick Mancini were featured in the Post-Standard for their business ideas as part of Syracuse Startup Weekend.

Mike Haynie, IVMF executive director and Barnes Professor of  Entrepreneurship in the Whitman School, commented on American Public Media‘s “Marketplace” on veteran unemployment. The show was broadcast on American Public Media and NPR.

Julie Causton-Theoharis, associate professor in the School of Education, is quoted in the New York Times on special education inclusion research in America’s schools.

Don Dutkowsky, professor of economics at the Maxwell School, is quoted in a Binghamton
Press & Sun-Bulletin story about the ripple effects on the area economy with BAE Systems considering relocation out of the area after its facility was flooded from Tropical Storm Lee.

Charles T. Driscoll, University Professor of Environmental Systems Engineering in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, authored a Sunday Post-Standard op-ed on mercury emission controls in the United States.
