roll callOn Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Syracuse University will join more than 175 colleges and universities from 50 states and the District of Columbia in a Remembrance Day National Roll Call. The event is designed to honor the more than 6,270 servicemen and servicewomen who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq) over the past decade.

The names of each serviceman and servicewoman killed in each theatre will be read by Syracuse University Army and Air Force ROTC cadets and members of the Student Veteran’s Group. The roll call begins at 5 a.m. in front of Hendricks Chapel and will be completed at 11 a.m., at the start of the second annual Veterans Day Ceremony. A “minute of silence” will also be observed at 11 a.m. (PST) or 2 p.m. (EST).

This year, Veterans Day falls on the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year, marking the 10th year since the September 11th attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City. The objective behind the Remembrance Day National Roll Call is to hold a synchronized reading of all the names of the service members killed in the line of duty on campuses across the country. Click here to see which schools will answer the call, http://va.eku.edu/sites/va.eku.edu/files/National_Roll_Call_Participants.pdf.

The National Roll Call is sponsored by NASPA Veterans Knowledge Community (VKC) and Student Veterans of America (SVA). NASPA represents more than 12,000administrators in higher education and SVA over 400 chapters at colleges and universities nationwide.

Robert Neuman, Air Force ROTC at reneuman@syr.edu or 443-2461, or contact Sean Galloway, president, Student Veterans Organization at spgallow@syr.edu.
