Stone Canoe hosts public literary showcases in community

Poets and writers featured in Stone Canoe, A Journal of Arts, Literature and Social Commentary, will read from their works at two separate events scheduled locally. 

Stone Canoe Poetry Night will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 7- 8:30 p.m. at the ArtRage Gallery, 505 Hawley Ave. Poets David Lloyd, Elizabeth Twiddy, Charles Martin and Jesse Nissim—all of whom have been featured in Stone Canoe—will discuss and read from their latest works. 

Lloyd directs the creative writing program at Le Moyne College and is the author of eight books, including two poetry collections. Twiddy is on the faculty at the Syracuse YMCA’s Downtown Writer’s Center, teaching poetry workshops and literature courses. Her first full-length collection of poems is “Love-Noise” (Standing Stone Books, 2010). The electronic version of the book won the Gold Medal in Poetry from the eLit Book Awards. Martin’s most recent book of poems, “Signs & Wonders,” was published in spring 2011 by The Johns Hopkins University Press. He is also the recipient of numerous awards. Nissim is currently a faculty writing fellow at Syracuse University. She is the author of several works of poetry and is a finalist for the 2011 National Poetry Series Open Competition.

Barnes & Noble in DeWitt will host editor Robert Colley and contributors Harriet Brown, Michael Jennings, Philip Memmer, Nissim and Twiddy for a sampling of readings in support of the fifth volume of Stone Canoe on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. Brown, author of two books, “Feed Me! Writers Dish about Food, Eating, Weight and Body Image” (Ballantine Books, 2009) and “Brave Girl Eating: A Family’s Struggle with Anorexia” (William Morrow, 2010) is also a regular contributor to the New York Times and has written for O, Redbook and other publications. Jennings, a graduate of the SU Creative Writing Graduate Program, is the author of eight books of poems. He teaches English at Cayuga Community College. Memmer is the author of three books of poems. He directs the YMCA’s Downtown Writer’s Center in Syracuse.
