Halloween fun run/walk combines fitness with festivities

Ghouls and goblins normally come out on Halloween night, but this year, they can be found running and walking around campus in the middle of the day. In an effort to provide a fun, healthy addition to the day’s festivities of tricks and treats, Syracuse University will be hosting a free, two-mile run or walk for students, faculty and staff, titled “Run Scared.”

funrun“The Healthy Monday Syracuse team is fortunate to have a great partnership with Joe Lore and his team at Recreation Services, in motivating people to become and stay active,” says Rebecca Bostwick, program director for the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion. “When Joe and I realized Halloween falls on a Monday this year, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to engage the campus community in a fun, ‘spirited’ way to ‘Move It’!”

Sponsored by the Department of Recreation Services and Healthy Monday Syracuse, this event will be a costume party and fitness opportunity in one. Start time is noon on the Kenneth A. Shaw Quad, with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served and prizes will be awarded to the best costumes beginning at 12:45 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to dress in costume—but are not required—with prizes to be given out in the following categories:

  • Best individual costume
  • Best group costume
  • Most spirited costume
  • I can’t believe you ran in that
  • Judge’s choice

“In the spirit of Halloween, we encourage the University community to dress up and participate in this fun event,” say Joseph Lore, director for the Department of Recreation Services. “We are excited to partner with our colleagues at Healthy Monday Syracuse in providing a fun and healthy Halloween activity.”
