FACULTY QUOTES

Harriet Brown, assistant professor of magazine journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, was interviewed on CBS News by SU alumnus Jeff Glor ’97 about Brown’s book, “Brave Girl Eating: A Family’s Struggle with Anorexia.”

An article in the October issue of Physics World (registration required) on black holes and Einstein’s equations of general relativity quotes Duncan Brown, associate professor of physics in The College of Arts and Sciences, on the National Science Foundation-funded supercomputer built in SU’s Green Data Center. The supercomputer will provide resources for scientists involved with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), located in Hanford, Wash., and Livingston, La. The supercomputer is one of three LIGO Scientific Collaborations (LSC) Tier 2 computing centers worldwide dedicated to gravitational-wave astronomy.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor article about Netflix reversing a plan for a separate website for DVD rentals through its Qwikster spin-off division. Thompson is also quoted in The National (U.A.E.) on the trend of new TV shows inspired by economic recession and in the RedEye on prime time TV dramas that might be filmed or set in Chicago.

Leonard Burman, the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs at the Maxwell School, authored a Forbes blog post on the federal estate tax and the Baltimore Orioles.

Charles T. Driscoll, University Professor of Environmental Systems Engineering in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, is quoted in a Syracuse.com report on widespread mercury contamination in the Great Lakes ecosystem.
