The New York celebration event for the establishment of the Paul Volcker Chair in Behavioral Economics at the Maxwell School was highlighted in New York Times Sunday Styles section.

Mary Karr, Jesse Truesdell Peck Professor of Literature in The College of Arts and Sciences, is profiled in America Magazine.

Data from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) is cited in a Factcheck.org article about Fox News facts, exaggerations and falsehoods
presented in the Republican presidential candidates’ debates, and in a Cleveland Plain Dealer article on a federal policy shift in immigration deportations.

Inside Higher Ed looks at how Syracuse University and other colleges and universities have established time limits for individual speakers at faculty senate meetings in order to allow for broader debate.

Globe Newswire reported on the Burton Blatt Institute’s participation in the National Disability Institute Boston convention on poverty affecting persons with disabilities.

A Grand Rapids Press story about ArtPrize 2011, a open art competition connecting arts, culture and communities, noted this year’s entry by Thomas Gokey, a Department of Foundation instructor in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Gokey was voted one of the top 25 ArtPrize artists in the Hillside neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Mich., where the competition is based.

The Justmeans website featured the new social entrepreneurship collaboration between the Whitman School, the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service (CPCS) and AltruHelp, a social media platform, toolbox and online community to support volunteering and corporate social responsibility. The partnership will provide students with an opportunity to experience the real world of social entrepreneurship and support the growth of AltruHelp.

The Post-Standard interviewed Chancellor Nancy Cantor on the University’s decision to move to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Robbi Farschman, director of community engagement & economic development at SU, spoke on 9WSYR’s “Bridge Street” program to discuss the progress of the Connective Corridor development and the different components of the construction.

Additionally, “Bridge Street,” featured the upcoming “Empty Bowls” event, co-sponsored by VPA’s School of Art and Design. The event features some 1,500 ceramic bowls–hand made by SU students, alumni, teachers and others–made available at SU’s Warehouse on Sept. 30 as a benefit for the Interreligious Food Consortium.

The Post-Standard covered the grand opening of the La Casita Cultural Center in downtown Syracuse. The center was founded by College of Arts and Sciences faculty members Inmaculada Lara-Bonilla and Silvio Torres Saillant, and is administered by The College of Arts and Sciences. Lara-Bonilla and Bea Gonzalez, dean of University College, were quoted in the article. WAER and WCNY also covered the opening event.

The Post-Standard announced that registration is currently underway for the fall Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities, based at the Whitman School.

The Syracuse New Times previewed the 2011-12 seasons of Syracuse Stage and the Department of Drama in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The Syracuse New Times also reviewed “Drawn to Paint: The Art of Jerome Witkin,” which runs through Oct. 23 at SUArt Galleries, and through Oct. 16 at XL Projects.

The Oct./Nov. issue of CNY Business Exchange–the annual green issue–features articles on several of SU’s community members and programs. The issue includes:

  • a feature on Maxwell School Alumnus S. Richard Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council, which cites the Syracuse Center of Excellence, recent recipient of the highest LEED® rating-Platinum-level certification-and quotes Ed Bogucz, executive director of the SyracuseCoE;<li> a photo of Syracuse University student members of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) volunteering with local businesses to work on sustainability practices;
  • a column by Kelly Lux, community and relationship manager for the School of Information Studies (iSchool), on essential social media tools for entrepreneurs and small business owners;

FACULTY QUOTES

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, appeared in a NBC News segment on the reality TV industry. He also discussed the media coverage of Michael Jackson’s doctor’s trial in The Atlantic.

Jeffrey Harris, Dean’s Professor of Finance in the Whitman School of Management, is quoted in an International Business Times article on Gary Gensler, chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, authored a Reuters column on tax evasion in New York state and a TrustLaw column on income disparity by gender. Johnston is also mentioned in The Atlantic on the future of journalism and the battle between Reuters and Bloomberg. And he is mentioned in a Kentucky News Leader op-ed on proposed tax increases for wealthy Americans.

An Atlanta Journal-Constitution commentary on federal taxes, tax code credits and loopholes cites a Washington Post quote from Len Burman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs in the Maxwell School.

An article in Government Technology magazine article on training local police officers to use Wi-Fi tester tools in combating child pornography quotes Lee Badman, information technology analyst and adjunct instructor in the School of Information Studies (iSchool), and cites a Network Computing blog post by Badman.

CBS News quotes Anthony Rotolo, assistant professor of practice in the School of Information Studies (iSchool), on the best ways for parents to prepare their children for possible online dangers.

Rick Burton, the David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, was quoted in the sports blog, The Big Lead.com, on the marketing implications for injured NFL quarterback Peyton Manning.

The Korea Times reported on comments by Soon Hee Kim, professor of public administration at the Maxwell School, that the “Saemaul (new village) Movement” should be extended to developing countries.

Denise Nepveux, postdoctoral research fellow at the Center on Human Policy, Law, and Disability Studies at Syracuse University, authored an opinion column for the Post-Standard on recreation center and program options for seniors in Syracuse.
