SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

College of Law professors Paula Johnson and Janis McDonald, co-directors of the Cold Case Justice Initiative, contributed an article to Nieman Reports, produced by The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. Nieman Reports explores what it means to be a journalist, examines major shifts in the industry, and shares with its worldwide audience articles about the rights and responsibilities of news organizations.

A Columbia, S.C. Associated Press article previewed an upcoming lecture at the University of South Carolina School of Law by Keith Bybee, director of the Institute for the Study of the Judiciary, Politics, and the Media and Paul E. and the Hon. Joanne F. Alper ’72 Judiciary Studies Professor at the College of Law, in recognition of national Constitution Day.

The Texas Observer cites information from SU’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) in an article on the incarceration of undocumented immigrants.

The Post-Standard reported on updates being made to Syracuse Stage, including a new outdoor plaza that will incorporate a performance space, bench seating, landscaping, pavers and high-tech features. The work is expected to be completed mid-November and is funded by the Connective Corridor from monies received through the Empire State Development Corp. and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.

The Post-Standard featured the solo exhibition by ceramist Margie Hughto, professor of ceramics in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Department of Art, Oct. 1-Jan. 12 at the Everson Museum of Art.

The Post-Standard reported on Syracuse University’s creation of two new orchestras for young musicians in Central New York: the Syracuse Youth Orchestra (SYO) and the Syracuse Youth String Orchestra (SYSO). Both orchestras are part of the Community Music Division of the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in VPA and administered through University College.

A Post-Standard column by Dick Case highlights the “Empty Bowls” event, co-sponsored by VPA’s School of Art and Design, where some 1,500 ceramic bowls, hand made by SU students, alumni, teachers and others, are made available at SU’s Warehouse on Sept. 30 as a benefit for the Interreligious Food Consortium.

The Post-Standard highlighted the upcoming Bill Leaf Memorial Kickball Tournament, which remembers SU alumnus and WSYR reporter Bill Leaf, and raises scholarship money to benefit local high school students and Newhouse School students.

The Post-Standard reported that Alejandro Garcia, professor of social work in the Falk College’s School of Social Work, will be honored as an outstanding educator as part of the Syracuse community’s Hispanic Heritage Month events.

FACULTY QUOTES

The Huffington Post published a column by Roy Gutterman, associate professor of communications law and journalism at the Newhouse School, on First Amendment questions about speech on state university campuses.

Eric Kingson, professor in the Falk College’s School of Social Work, is quoted in an ABC News blog, and in the Beaumont Enterprise on the Galveston Plan for Social Security.

Michael Ebner, assistant professor of history in the Maxwell School and The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Rochester Democrat & Chronicle article on some of Benito Mussolini’s clothes possibly being found in the Rochester suburb of Webster.

YNN quotes Jeffrey Stonecash, professor of political science in the Maxwell School and College of Arts and Sciences, on area primary election results.
