Syracuse University to conduct Orange Alert, siren test on Thursday

Tuesday, September 6, 2011, By News Staff
Share

Syracuse University will conduct an e-mail/text message/cell voice/campus phone test of the ORANGE ALERT Campus Crisis Alert Notification System on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 3:30 p.m. This will also include a test of the ORANGE ALERT outdoor siren system on SU’s North and South campuses.

For the purpose of this test, the ORANGE ALERT message will be sent to all SU students, faculty and staff; SUNY-ESF students; and to SUNY-ESF faculty and staff that have signed up.  ORANGE ALERT will send a notice to all devices that are registered on the system.

The sirens will be activated for a single 10-second blast at the time of the ORANGE ALERT test.  Staff who are assigned two-way portable radios will also receive a test message over the radio at the time of the ORANGE ALERT test.

The subject line of the test e-mail will read “ORANGE ALERT SYSTEM TEST.” The test text message will appear from number 226787 or from number 67283. Syracuse University has a commitment to regular assessment of the performance of the Orange Alert System and the companies that provide the services that allow these mass communications.  This test is being performed using the product of a potential new service provider.  Thus,  if you have programmed the SU Orange Alert text code into your cell phone, the “sender” phone number for text messages will be a different number for this test than for past tests, therefore “SU ORANGE ALERT” will not appear as “sender.”  That optional function should be restored in future use of the system.

SU students, faculty and staff:  Now (in advance of the test) is a good time to review and/or modify your ORANGE ALERT contact information. Go to MySlice ( http://myslice.syr.edu ).  Login using your personal NetID and Password.  Refer to the “ORANGE ALERT” link. Then review/modify your information and save any changes.  For changes to be in effect for the Sept. 8 test, all changes must be completed by Sept.6.

For additional information on the ORANGE ALERT system, visit http://publicsafety.syr.edu/html/orangealerts.html
