A White House blog on initiatives to increase job training opportunities and ease licensing requirements for veterans and military spouses cites Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) and JPMorgan Chase’s $7.5 million seed funding for the creation of the IVMF as an act of commitment from companies that have responded to President Obama’s challenge to the private sector to hire or train 100,000 unemployed veterans and military spouses by 2013.

The participation of the SU College of Law’s Disability Law Clinic is noted in a WNYC report on a federal ruling against New York City’s plan to remove its fire alarm call box system. The 1997 injunction against dismantlement which was upheld protects the rights of deaf and hearing-impaired populations reporting emergencies from the street. The federal action was also reported by the New York Times and New York Post.

A Poynter Romenesko column on journalism education includes SU among colleges and universities participating in a Carnegie Corporation/John S. and James L. Knight Foundation initiative to help revitalize journalism schools

Education Week (registration required) featured a National Science Foundation-funded Educational Simulations project developed by Benjamin H. Dotger, assistant professor of teaching and leadership at the School of Education, and the State University of New York’s Upstate Clinical Skills Center. The project is a simulation training program for school leaders at SU which borrows techniques used in the medical profession’s “standardized patient model” used to simulate disease symptoms for medical students. Used to help school principals and teachers learn how to cope with tricky conversations, the project is rolling out a school leadership training curriculum this fall, based on its 15 principal and 13 teacher simulations.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. David M. Tridib Mazumdar, the Howard R. Gendal Professor of Marketing in the Whitman School of Management, is quoted in a 9WSYR report on a local coupon trading group.
