SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

A Times-Picayune editorial on coordinating military and National Guard leadership during response to a domestic disaster mentions William Banks, Board of Advisors Distinguished Professor and director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism in the College of Law and the Maxwell School.

The London-based art web project ArtLyst reports video artist and SU alumnus Bill Viola ’73 as a recipient of Japan’s Praemium Imperiale Award, a prize awarded annually by the Japan Art Association.

College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean Anne Clarke’s participation on the three-person jury for “The Art-Quilt Experience: An International Juried Art-Quilt Exhibition” at Stone Quarry Hill Art Park and Cazenovia College is reported in a Madison County Courier story on quilt-related exhibitions in the Cazenovia area.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, was interviewed on the Randi Rhodes radio show on tax aspects of deficit talks between President Obama and Congress. An audio link is available here.

An “Impertinent Economist” blog posting by Len Burman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs in the Maxwell School, in Forbes discusses John Boehner, Ronald Reagan, the economy and federal debt.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor article about the News of the World scandal in the United Kingdom and its potential impact on Rupert Murdoch’s global media empire. Thompson is also quoted in a Chicago Tribune story on pregnancy-related reality TV shows.

SU alumnus Rami Khouri ’70, G’98, director of the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut and editor-at-large of the Beirut-based Daily Star newspaper, is quoted in a Reuters article on U.S. and French pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and in a CTV News report on Canadian opposition to Palestine’s campaign for United Nations recognition as an independent state. Also, Khouri commented for an Al Jazeera report on continuing demonstrations for reform in Egypt and authored a commentary in the Wilson Quarterly (subscription required) about the century of struggle in the Arab world for sovereignty, from World War I forward.

Eric Kingson, professor in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, is quoted in a YNN report on Medicare and aging Americans.
