The Slutzker Center for International Services has announced the appointment of Fariba Rahmanzadeh to the position of assistant director, effective May 9.

In this leadership position, Rahmanzadeh will contribute to crisis management, continue to plan and manage the international student orientation programs and supervise the graduate assistant in the oversight of the Connections mentoring program for new first-year and transfer students.

“Fariba brings to the leadership team of the Slutzker Center a broad range of cross-cultural, academic and life experiences, which will enhance our ability to meet the needs of our students,” says Patricia Burak, director of the Slutzker Center. “Her connections to the community, to students, to parents and to colleagues enrich our support networks in countless ways.”

Throughout the past 15 years, Rahmanzadeh has progressively served as program and information assistant, and international student and scholar adviser in the Slutzker Center.

During her tenure at SU, Rahmanzadeh has been recognized for her outstanding work. In 2004, she received both the Senior Vice President’s Award for Excellence of Service and the Exemplary Achievement Award. In 1997, she was honored with the Senior Vice President’s “Student First” Award for Excellence.

Due to her active role in the community, Rahmanzadeh received the 2009 International Citizen Award from the International Center of Syracuse, and was recently named the center’s first emeritus board member after serving the maximum term on the board.

Since 1998, Rahmanzadeh has worked with numerous student groups and community organizations as an adviser and board member. Currently, she serves on the board of the Fulbright Association, Central New York Chapter.

Rahmanzadeh earned a master of fine arts degree at SU in 1982, and a bachelor of arts degree in Tehran, Iran, in 1976. She is fluent in English, Farsi and Azerbaijani, has a conversational level of fluency in Turkish and a functional understanding of Arabic.
