Syracuse Stage will host a reception for the deaf community on Saturday, April 16, at 1:30 p.m., preceding the 3 p.m. performance of “The Miracle Worker.” Patrons will be able to meet the creators of the widely seen signed video installation exhibit, which is
part of the project known as “Know Me … the Whole Me.” The exhibit is currently being shown in the Stage’s main lobby during the run of the show.
“Know Me … the Whole Me,” filmed and produced by Ellen Blalock, features deaf or hard of hearing students and staff from the WHOLE ME afterschool program. “The main goal of WHOLE ME, Inc. is to bridge the communication gap that many of our deaf or hard-of-hearing youth face on a daily basis when interacting with hearing family and community members,” said Christine Kovar, founder and executive director of WHOLE ME, Inc.
“We do this by providing a variety of opportunities for the hearing community to interact with and get to know members of the deaf community on a personal basis, beyond hearing loss.”
The project, titled “Know Me … the Whole Me” was developed with the hopes of motivating viewers to learn American Sign Language. “Conceptually, I am hopeful that the installation promotes ‘consciousness,’” said Carol Charles, Community Engagement
Manager at Syracuse Stage. “I hope it impresses upon people as they weave in and out of the space that members of the deaf community live and breathe and interact with us every day.”
Interpreted performances have been offered at Syracuse Stage for years and have provided invaluable services for the deaf or hard-of-hearing community.
