Deanna Govoni ’02, social media marketing manager for Cisco, returns to campus this week to talk about blogging, tweeting and emerging technology trends.

govoniOn Wednesday, April 13, as part of the Alumni Speaker Series, Govoni will discuss her career from 7-8:30 p.m. in 205 Hall of Languages. On April 14, as part of the HUB Speaker Series, she will speak about social media in a global organization from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in 347 Hinds Hall.

Govoni, an alumna of the School of Information Studies, manages Cisco’s social media marketing strategy, as well as the technical execution of Cisco’s external corporate blogging program. She is also responsible for the development and evangelism of social media governance, education and training programs across Cisco.

In her presentation on Wednesday, “Pursuing a Career in Social Media,” Govoni will discuss her own career journey and career decision making. She will address important skills for succeeding in a social media position, as well as share tips with students who wish to turn their passion for social media into a professional career.

“We’re so happy that Deanna is returning to campus, ” says Kim Brown, alumni programs coordinator in Career Services. “More and more of our students express that they want to pursue social media as a career. Deanna has first hand experience in this area and she will share some great insights.

“Deanna will also show that there’s much more to social media than being able to write 140-character tweets,” says Brown.

Govoni’s role at Cisco involves detailed analysis of blog traffic trends, measurement of social media effectiveness and user interface design.

In her speech, “Social Media in a Global Organization,” Govoni will tackle the more technical aspects of social media. Specifically, she will address the ways in which social media technologies can be used to enhance collaboration within a global organization and beyond. Govoni will speak in depth about strategies and technologies used at Cisco.

Both of Govoni’s speeches are free and open to the public. The Alumni Speaker Series is sponsored by Career Services and the Office of Alumni Relations. For more information about the Wednesday speech, contact Brown at kmbrow04@syr.edu, 443-3616.

The HUB Speaker Series is made possible by a unique university-industry collaboration founded by SU and JPMorgan Chase. For more information about Govoni’s Thursday speech, contact Sarah Hagelin  at shagelin@syr.edu, 443-5603.

The HUB goal is for students, faculty, companies, universities and the broader community to benefit from these collaborative efforts.
