Google’s Travis Mason ’06 to speak on April 7
Only five years out of college, SU alumnus Travis Mason has already made his mark in the world of public policy and educational reform. As part of the Alumni Speaker Series, he will visit campus on Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Eggers Hall, room 032. Mason will discuss his position at Google, his passion for educational reform and the ways in which his SU experience shaped his career path and ambitions.
Mason, a member of the government affairs and public policy team at Google, received his bachelor’s degree from SU in 2006 and his master’s degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2008. Recognized for his thought leadership on education, national security, homeland defense and urban policy, Mason was named a national Harry S. Truman Scholar, Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) fellow, and Center for the Study of the Presidency Scholar.
While at SU, Mason’s accomplishments on campus and in the community were significant and far reaching. Not only was he SU’s Student Association president, he served on the Board of Trustees. He also co-founded OrangeSeeds, the first-year leadership empowerment program. In his senior year, Mason was given the Syracuse City YWCA Diversity Achiever Award and was recognized by the mayor for “embodying the spirit of peace, justice, freedom and dignity.”
“Travis was such an amazing leader on campus as an undergraduate,” says Kim Brown, alumni programs coordinator.” We are extremely pleased to bring him back to share with students all that he has accomplished since leaving SU. He will be a great source of inspiration and advice.”
Eliminating educational inequity has long been a passion of Mason’s. He has received numerous awards for his work in this area, including citations from the Prince George’s County Council and county executive, Maryland State superintendent, Maryland General Assembly and the 43rd president of the United States, George W. Bush.
