SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

An Associated Press article about people under scrutiny in government counterterrorism investigations cites data from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). Also, the Center for Investigative Reporting’s California Watch website cites TRAC statistics in a story on sentencing in white collar criminal cases.

SU alumnus Rami Khouri ’70, G’98, Director of the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut and editor-at-large of the Beirut-based Daily Star newspaper, was interviewed on NPR Weekend Edition about government and public reaction in the Arab world to air strikes in Libya in support of the U.N. resolution authorizing a no-fly zone over the country. Also, an op-ed by Khouri addressing implications of and concerns over the movement of foreign troops into Bahrain appeared recently in the New York Times.

A Crain’s New York Business (registration required) profile of the Meatless Monday campaign includes the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications among schools and colleges associated with the campaign.

The Post-Star (Glens Falls, N.Y.) reported on the impact of Real Jobs NY, a Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) program that helps people with psychiatric disabilities find sustainable employment.

The Post-Standard reported briefly on two College of Visual and Performing Arts awards to be presented in New York City at VPA’s May 19 gala at JPMorgan Chase: the Icon of Style Award to Vanessa Williams ’85 and the Dean’s Award of Distinction to Frank Bisignano, chief administrative officer of JPMorgan Chase & Co.

The installation of newly-designed Connective Corridor bus wraps Friday was covered by local media including CNY Central, WSYR radio and WAER.

FACULTY QUOTES

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, spoke on MSNBC‘s “Rachel Maddow
Show” (view clip) about the continuing contention over public workers’ pensions in Wisconsin.

Recent commentary by Gustav Niebuhr, associate professor of religion and media in The College of Arts and Sciences and S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, on the PBS program “Religion & Ethics Newsweekly” is cited in a Beliefnet blog entry about Islam and Christianity in America, which was also republished in the Huffington Post.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor article on National Public Radio reporting and the Congressional vote to cut NPR funding; and in a Gulf Weekly (Bahrain) magazine story on the future of television’s Two and a Half Men situation comedy without actor Charlie Sheen. Thompson is also quoted in the New York Post on the new season of “Dancing with the Stars” and the Los Angeles Daily News on “American Idol.”

An essay on free speech by Roy Gutterman, associate professor of communications law and journalism at the Newhouse School, appeared in the Sunday Post-Standard. The Gutterman commentary about the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Westboro Baptist Church protests was first published in the Huffington Post.
