SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The Post-Standard reported on new Syracuse University programs in Dubai and Saudi Arabia. SU Vice Chancellor and Provost Eric Spina is quoted. SU plans to open a business and recruiting office in Dubai; develop curriculum for the first women’s university in Saudi Arabia; and expand Project Advance programs to private high schools in Dubai.

Robbi Farschman, SU director of the Connective Corridor, commented for a Post-Standard Dick Case column on improvements planned for the Connective Corridor route, including removal and replacement of trees; installation of porous pavement and other roadwork; and improvements to Forman Park. Farschman is also quoted in a YNN report on the topic.

A 9WSYR Bridge Street report on the Start Up and Grow business conference for the military community featured Mike Haynie, assistant professor of entrepreneurship in the Whitman School of Management. Also, the Watertown Daily Times briefly previewed Haynie’s presentation and the SBA program.

The Greater Binghamton Business Journal noted that Larry Kramer, adjunct professor in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, will speak at the March 31 Famous Entrepreneurs Series lecture.

The Central New York Business Journal reported on the Whitman School of Management’s iMBA program being ranked 15th in “The Best Colleges” review of publicly available data.

The Post-Standard briefly previewed today’s presentation by Daniel Ellsberg at SU.

FACULTY QUOTES

Jason Wiles, assistant professor of biology in The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Scientific American article concerning his work on evolution and Islam; and cited on the National Center for Science Education web site on Muslim diversity of thought around evolution.

Henry Lambright, professor of political science and public administration in the Maxwell School, is quoted in an Associated Press article about the loss of a NASA research satellite in the Pacific Ocean after its launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base on Friday.

William Banks, Board of Advisors Distinguished Professor and director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism in the College of Law and the Maxwell School, was interviewed for a YNN report about Pan Am Flight 103 and Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, is quoted on server farms in rural areas to handle Internet traffic and data storage for a CBS MoneyWatch.com report on corporate tax giveaways; on tax revenues and rates in a Nieman Watchdog article; and appeared on Fox’s Lou Dobbs show. Johnston was also included in the Sports Illustrated February media power list for his story on Nike/ESPN media endorsements.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted about the public’s expectations for celebrity behavior in a Minneapolis Star Tribune story on Charlie Sheen and other pop culture stars in the marketplace; and in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review in a story on surveillance, paparazzi and the Internet.

The Burton Blatt Institute’s Brian McLane discusses the issues that people with disabilities face when trying to get around on snow-covered sidewalks in a recent YNN report.

Jeffrey Stonecash, professor of political science in the Maxwell School and College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Newsday (subscription required) article about Gov. Cuomo’s strategy in proposing to cut $1.5 billion in education spending.

Cynthia Sass, College of Human Ecology alumna and registered dietitian, appeared on the 9WSYR Bridge Street segment “Stop Counting, Start Living” discussing easy-to-use approaches to nutrition. Lynn Brann, assistant professor of nutrition in the College of Human Ecology, and COHE students in the Nutrition Education and Promotion Association (NEPA), helped organize the program.
