SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Articles in Broadway World, Chicago Sun-Times and CNY Central (view clip) reported on College of Visual and Performing Arts alumnus Aaron Sorkin ’83, who won the 2011 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for the film, “The Social Network.”

An Albany Times-Union story on AWS Truepower and sources of alternative power noted that Syracuse University helped the company develop monitoring software for its plant management services.

SU is mentioned in Republican (Springfield, Mass.) and Lowell Sun articles about growth of the University of Massachusetts endowment.

A new program held at Wilson Park Community Center for grade school students during their winter break was featured in Syracuse.com. The program was led by SU students.

The Sunday Post-Standard noted that John Liddy, entrepreneur in residence at Syracuse Tech Garden and director of the Syracuse Student Sandbox program, will also serve as temporary entrepreneur in residence for the new student entrepreneur program at Le Moyne College.

A Post-Standard feature looking back on accomplishments of resigning SUNY Morrisville president Ray Cross notes SU’s partnership with the SUNY school in developing the Syracuse Community Test Kitchen (COMTEK) at the South Side Innovation Center.

The Post-Standard briefly reported on the upcoming presentation at SU by Daniel Ellsberg March 8 as a guest of the Tully Center for Free Speech at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Syracuse.com briefly reported on SU’s announcement that rapper Kid Cudi will headline the Block Party in the Carrier Dome in April.

The Scotsman Feb. 25-March 3 issue reported briefly on the record setting SU 2010 United Way Campaign.

The Post-Standard reviewed the Syracuse Stage presentation of August Wilson’s “Radio Golf,” a co-production with Geva Theatre Center in Rochester and directed by Timothy Bond, producing artistic director of Syracuse Stage and the department of drama in VPA.

FACULTY QUOTES

School of Information Studies (iSchool) Professor Milton Mueller is featured in Ars Technica and CNet News stories about his recent campaign to prevent the adoption of an Obama administration proposal that would allow national governments to veto creation of controversial general Top Level Domains (gTLDs) by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Comments by Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, on Oscar winners’ speeches are included in a Christian Science Monitor story about the 83rd Annual Academy Award show and the significance of live events to broadcast television. Thompson is also quoted in the Boston Globe on Jeopardy’s “Watson” computer competitor.

Menachem Z. Rosensaft, distinguished visiting lecturer at Syracuse University College of Law, reviewed “The Long Road Home, The Aftermath of the Second World War” by Ben Shephard in the Jewish Chronicle and Huffington Post. The book depicts the era of displaced persons after liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the course of humanitarian relief efforts in Europe following World War II.

R. David Lankes, associate professor in the iSchool, is featured in a video report to the Special Libraries Association’s Future Ready 365 blog, discussing the future of libraries.

A Natchez Democrat article about the unveiling of a new marker dedicated to civil rights activist Wharlest Jackson quotes Paula Johnson, professor of law in the SU College of Law and co-director of the Cold Case Justice Initiative (CCJI). Johnson was present at the ceremony.

Jeffrey Stonecash, professor of political science in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Crain’s New York Business article about Governor Andrew Cuomo, the proposed New York state budget and business-backed legislation on property taxes caps, workers’ compensation and subsidized-power.

Sandra Bargainnier, assistant professor of exercise science in the School of Education, commented for a Post-Standard story about exercising for flexibility.

Tony Callisto, chief and director of the SU Department of Public Safety, authored a Post-Standard Neighbors Northeast guest commentary on reporting suspicious activity to local law enforcement personnel.
