Syracuse University is mentioned in a PC Magazine article that discusses a connection between social networking, student enrollment and retention, Foursquare and augmented reality.

The Green Car Website (U.K.) reported briefly on the NYSERDA grant supporting SU research on a diesel fuel injection system for more efficient engines.

Data from SU’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) is noted in a Fox News Latino report on the number of cases still pending in the nation’s immigration courts.

Research by Stephanie Ortigue, assistant professor of psychology in The College of Arts and Sciences, analyzing the effect of love on the human brain’s neural network is featured in a Scientific American web graphic. In the Feb. 2011 issue of the magazine a “Graphic Science” diagram details how activity in the neural network affects cognitive functions. Also, The Week magazine mentions Ortigue’s research in an article about topics relative to Valentine’s Day. MSNBC and Stanford University’s Scope medical blog also reference Ortigue’s research.

SU is mentioned in Associated Press and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reviews of “A Widow’s Story,” the new memoir by Joyce Carol Oates ’60, H’00. Also, a USA Today article on the Oates memoir briefly discusses her writing process and the SU archive of her notes. Sean Quimby, associate librarian in SU Library’s Special Collections, is quoted.

A Miami Herald story following up on entrepreneurs who won business competitions features Whitman School of Business undergraduate Jacob Nolan.

The Eagle Newspapers reported on the launch of the Near Westside Initiative (NWSI) microloan program. Maarten Jacobs and Michael Short, NWSI director and deputy director, respectively, are quoted.

Sunday’s Dick Case column in the Post-Standard featured the “Black Syracuse and Beyond” photography show in the Panasci Lounge at SU’s Schine Student Center. Exhibition of the Richard Breland photos, centering on the 15th Ward, is sponsored by the Department of African American Studies in The College of Arts and Sciences. Joan Bryant, associate professor of African American Studies is also mentioned.

Peter Plumley, research associate professor at L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, is among the 2011 Post-Standard Achievement Award winners reported in Sunday’s Post-Standard.

Len Burman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch article on tax code changes and briefly mentioned in a San Francisco Chronicle blog entry on politics, leadership and the federal deficit.

Andrew W. Cohen, associate professor of history in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a Los Angeles Times article on 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and current debate over American history.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, appeared on MSNBC (watch video clip) discussing President Obama’s budget proposal. Also, Johnston’s Tax Notes column about tax burdens on the working poor is noted in Wall Street Journal and Business Insider reports.

John Palmer, University Professor and former Maxwell School dean, is quoted in an MSNBC report on the federal budgets Congress is working on now, for the current fiscal year ending in September and for President Obama’s recently released proposed budget for fiscal year 2012.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School, is quoted in a WKBW-TV (Buffalo) news report on the abrupt resignation of Chris Lee, former New York representative from the 26th Congressional District. Thompson is also quoted in a Fox News story about the evolution of Captain America and other American superheroes in film and comics.
