The Maxwell School’s interim dean, Michael Wasylenko, announces that Stuart S. Rosenthal, who currently holds the title of Melvin A. Eggers Economics Faculty Scholar, has been named the new Maxwell Advisory Board Professor of Economics.

Rosenthal has been a faculty member at Syracuse since 1999. His fields of study span urban economics, housing and real estate economics, and public finance; his recent work has focused on entrepreneurship and job creation in cities, as well as on the secondary mortgage market. He has published extensively and his work is frequently cited. Rosenthal edits the Journal of Urban Economics, holds numerous honors and awards, and is a fellow of the Homer Hoyt School of Advanced Studies in Real Estate and Urban Economics.

“I am truly honored to be given the opportunity to carry the Maxwell name forward as the Maxwell Advisory Board Professor,” says Rosenthal. “This is a great institution with great people, and it is a pleasure to be part of the Maxwell community.”

The endowed professorship was established in 2007 through generous contributions from members of the Maxwell School’s Advisory Board in order to recognize exceptional faculty from across the School’s disciplines.

“Professor Rosenthal exemplifies the kind of productive and dedicated faculty member whom this award was established to honor. His scholarship is well known, he is a tireless student advisor and a popular teacher, and he is without question a leader in his field. We are fortunate to have him on our faculty and pleased to be able to recognize his accomplishments with this professorship,” says Wasylenko.

Rosenthal is a senior research associate in the Maxwell School’s Center for Policy Research and a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Housing Research, Real Estate Economics and the Journal of Housing Economics. Before joining SU, he held faculty positions at Virginia Tech University and the University of British Columbia. He also held a research position with the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Rosenthal received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1986.
