SYRFILMFEST presents Coppola’s ‘One From the Heart’ Feb. 13 as Valentine’s Day fundraiser

Dessert and champagne, music by Crystal Gayle and Tom Waits and Coppola’s only musical—could there be a better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and support the Syracuse International Film Festival (SYRFILM)?

The SYRFILM organization that brings year-round programming to Central New York will present the Francis Ford Coppola musical “One From the Heart” on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m. at The Palace Theatre, 2384 James St., Syracuse. For its second annual Valentine’s Day Fundraiser event, SYRFILM will show the film in 35mm, followed by a dessert buffet—including champagne.

Tickets are $10 for the film only (available at the door), or $20 for the film, dessert and champagne (reservations: call 315-443-8826.)

After completing “Apocalypse Now,” director Coppola initially planned his next picture to be an intimate romantic musical to be shot on a low budget in Las Vegas. Three years later, “One From the Heart” had become a big budget spectacular, shot at his newly opened Zeotrope Studios on strikingly stylized sets and costing $27 million.

The story stars Frederick Forrest (Hank) and Teri Garr (Franny) as a working class couple whose relationship has fallen into a rut. They both set off to find new partners and meet Leila (Natasha Kinsky) and Ray (Raul Julia), a high-wire artist and would-be actor. But Franny and Hank still love each other; the question is whether that love will bring them back together. Singer/songwriter Waits received an Oscar nomination for his widely acclaimed song score, performed with country music star Gayle.

Desserts for the dessert buffet will be made and served by members of the SYRFILM board of directors.

Also at the event, the Stickley Collector’s Cabinet winner will be announced. There’s still time to get a ticket for the drawing—and support SYRFILM—by sending a check ($25 per ticket) to the SYRFILM Office, Hotel Syracuse, 500 S. Warren St., Syracuse, N.Y. 13202.
