Jan Cohen-Cruz, director of Imagining America and professor at Syracuse University, is quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education on Imagining America’s support of multidisciplinary research and academic work that happens outside of the classroom or laboratory.

National Parks Traveler reported on the research underway by Douglas Frank, professor of biology in The College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with National Park Service, that will focus on grazing areas most frequented by bison in Yellowstone National Park and the long-term stability of the park’s grasslands.

The Cui Fei exhibition at the Warehouse Gallery was featured in the Jan./Feb. issue of YISHU-Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art.

PhysOrg.com reported on the new research by Patrick Mather, director of Syracuse Biomaterials Institute (SBI) and Milton and Ann Stevenson professor of biomedical and chemical engineering in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS), to apply the concept of functionally graded materials to shape memory polymers.

Philanthropy News Digest reported on the call for entries for the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications’ fifth annual Mirror Awards.

The Engineer (U.K.) reported on the strategies for improving the efficiency of wind turbines developed by researchers from LCS.

Dan Klamm, outreach and marketing coordinator at SU’s Center for Career Services; Me’Shae Brooks-Rolling, senior operations manager in the Burton Blatt Institute; and Anthony Rotolo, assistant professor of practice and social media strategist in the School of Information Studies (iSchool) contributed advice for job seekers in 2011 for a Post-Standard Moneywise article.

Jeffrey Hoone, executive director of Light Work and the Coalition of Museum and Art Centers at Syracuse University, and Anja Chavez, Warehouse Gallery curator of contemporary art, are included in a Post-Standard Stars magazine story on a 2011 wish list for area leaders in the visual arts.

FACULTY QUOTES

Horace Campbell, professor of African American Studies and political science in The College of Arts and Sciences, appeared on the Democracy Now! “War and Peace Report” to speak about Southern Sudan’s week-long referendum on whether to break off from Sudan and form a new independent state. He additionally spoke on the program about the disputed November election in the Ivory Coast. Additionally, an opinion piece in the Daily Nation (Kenya) on Ivory Coast events and African politics mentions Campbell.

Eric Kingson, professor in the School of Social Work in the College of Human Ecology, appeared on the Fox News program “Your World with Neil Cavuto” to speak about Social Security reform.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, commented for a CNN report (watch video clip) and was quoted in New York Times and New York Observer articles about Jon Stewart, journalism and comedy. Thompson is also mentioned in Los Angeles Times and Business Insider blog postings about media news, and spoke to Detroit’s WJR-AM (listen to audio clip) about the popularity of television’s “Jersey Shore” program and other “real housewives” franchises.

Rocky Ruggiero, assistant coordinator of the field studies program for SU Abroad in Florence, introduced a segment and provided commentary for a History Channel “Engineering an Empire” show (watch video clip) about Siena, Italy during the early Renaissance.

Ed Bogucz, executive director of the SyracuseCoE, was interviewed on WCNY’s Central Issues year-end regional review of 2010 and forward look at 2011.

Grant Reeher, professor of political science in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, commented on the 2011 inauguration of Governor Andrew Cuomo following WCNY’s broadcast of the Jan. 1 ceremony.

A photo of SU and SUNY-ESF students working on the installation of the Waverly Rain Garden accompanied a Post-Standard editorial on civic engagement.

Philip Arnold, associate professor of religion in The College of Arts and Sciences, authored a Dec. 31 Post-Standard op-ed about the passage of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

David Driesen, University Professor in the College of Law, authored a Post-Standard commentary on the REINS Act, a federal proposal to prevent expert administrative agencies from enacting any economically significant standards without Congressional approval.

Rick Wright, professor of television, radio and film in the Newhouse School, commented on 9WSYR TV about the removal of Navy officer Owen Honors from command of an aircraft carrier over videos he made and showed to the crew while serving as the ship’s second-in-command.
