SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Statistics from SU’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) are cited in several stories in the Columbus Dispatch (Ohio) about the deportation of suspects and witnesses in criminal prosecutions; repeated border-crossing returns of illegal immigrants; and the costs of enforcement and deportation.

Laura Heyman, associate professor of art photography in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Department of Transmedia, was featured in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for being the grand prize winner of the Silver Eye Center for Photography Fellowship 2010. Heyman’s photography is currently on exhibit at the Pittsburgh center.

The Sunday Post-Standard Homes section featured residential apartments in the recently renovated Lincoln Building which combine living and work space. Maarten Jacobs, Near Westside Initiative (NWSI) director, is quoted.

The Scotsman Press reported on the call for entries for the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting, to be awarded this spring by the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

FACULTY QUOTES

Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the College of Human Ecology, authored a New York Times sports article on sportswomen and female athletes endorsing consumer products.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, was a guest on the Public Radio International show, “The Takeaway,” discussing high rates of television viewing. An audio link is available here. Thompson is also quoted in a ChicagoNow.com blog post about crying in public and in a Third Age story about the launch of Oprah Winfrey’s new network. Additionally, Thompson appeared on ESPN‘s “Outside the Line” (watch video clip) commenting about the NBC experiment 30 years ago of broadcasting a Dolphins/Jets football game using no sports announcers.

Mitch Franklin, assistant professor of accounting in the Whitman School of Management, is quoted in a Reuters article about financial advisers and their qualifications.

Keith Bybee, the Paul E. and the Hon. Joanne F. Alper ’72 Judiciary Studies Professor at the College of Law, and director of the Institute for the Study of the Judiciary, Politics and the Media, authored a Washington Post “Political Bookworm” guest commentary about judges, impartiality and the concept of acceptable hypocrisies.

Amanda Nicholson, assistant professor of retail management in the Whitman School, is quoted in a Smart Money magazine article on toy stores and holiday shopping.

Grant Reeher, professor of political science in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, is quoted in a Rochester Democrat and Chronicle article about Republican gains in the New York state
legislature.

College of Law adjunct professor Joseph Fahey authored a Post-Standard op-ed on establishment of the compensation fund for medical treatment of 9/11 first responders.

Kevin Mann, part-time instructor in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a 9WSYR report on auto companies and year-end incentives.

Jeffrey Stonecash, professor of political science in the Maxwell School and College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Post-Standard report on Andrew Cuomo’s appointment of Jeremy Creelan as special counsel for public integrity and ethics reform.
