SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

An article in the Economist (UK) about medieval warfare details forensic archaeological research by Shannon Novak, associate professor of anthropology in the Maxwell School and The College of Arts and Sciences. The site being excavated is a mass grave from medieval times at Towton, England, where a decisive battle during the War of Roses took place.

Editor & Publisher reported on establishment of the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting, to be awarded by the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications for the first time in the spring of 2011. Newhouse School Dean Lorraine Branham is quoted. The Toner Prize is part of a larger program in political reporting launched by the Newhouse School and the Maxwell School of Public Affairs and Citizenship.

WCHS6 (Portland, Maine) and TMCnet.com stories make note of Syracuse University’s first place finish in the Honda Media Challenge marketing competition for its CR-Z campaign. The SU-studentrun NewHouse Agency, using a speed dating approach on YouTube, was one of three finalists in the competition.

PhysOrg reported on strategies for improving the efficiency of wind turbines developed by researchers from the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science.

The Near Westside Initiative (NWSI) holiday celebration and open house at the recently renovated Lincoln Building was covered by CNY Central (watch video clip).

CNY Central (watch video clip) briefly previewed the upcoming Dec. 21 commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

FACULTY QUOTES

Eric Kingson, professor of social work in the College of Human Ecology’s School of Social Work, co-authored an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle on Social Security and the values on which the program is founded.

Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the College of Human Ecology, co-authored a column in the SportsBusiness Journal (subscription required) about Sports Day in Canada and how the concept might work in the United States as a nationwide grassroots campaign.

Grant Reeher, professor of political science in the Maxwell School, is quoted in an Ithaca Journal article on the process of redrawing legislative districts in the state and in a Journal News (Westchester, N.Y.) story about the narrow majority of Republicans in the New York State Senate.

Anthony Rotolo, assistant professor of practice and social media strategist in the School of Information Studies (iSchool), co-authored a Mashable holiday survival guide for social media professionals.
