SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Statistics from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) are cited in a Dallas Morning News article about federal prosecutions of Internet child pornography crimes and a Valley Morning Star (Harlingen, Texas) story about an American Bar Association legal program for asylum seekers. Data compiled by TRAC is also mentioned in Arizona Daily Star and Boston Globe articles on deportation reprieves for immigrants and wait times for immigration cases, respectively.

A New York Times story about veterans who become entrepreneurs mentions the Whitman School of Management’s Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV).

Sean Kirst’s Monday Post-Standard column notes the role of Maxwell School graduate students researching the papers of U.S. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan in preparation for a new book on his life. The book’s editor, Steven Weisman, will discuss “Daniel Patrick Moynihan: A Portrait in Letters” and Moynihan’s life, work and intellect at SU on Thursday.

John Liddy, entrepreneur in residence at Syracuse Tech Garden and director of the Syracuse Student Sandbox program, authored an op-ed about student entrepreneurship in the Sunday Post-Standard.

Laurence Thomas, professor of philosophy and political science in The College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell School, was mentioned in Associated Press and Inside Higher Ed stories about students text-messaging during classes.

A Post and Courier (Charleston, S.C.) story about an exhibition of architectural proposals for a new Charleston transit hub, from a design exercise by Architecture for Humanity, mentions the SU School of Architecture student submission, which placed third.

The Greater Binghamton Business Journal reported on collaboration between SU and Impact Technologies to develop small wind turbines and street lights powered by alternate energy. SU’s School of Architecture and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science are also mentioned.

A Post-Standard City Neighbors story covered the recent election of seven new members to the Near Westside Initiative (NWSI) board of directors. Marilyn Higgins, SU’s vice president for community engagement and economic development, and Maarten Jacobs, NWSI director, are quoted in the article.

SU’s call for Unsung Heroes nominations for the University’s Martin Luther King Jr. 2010 Celebration was noted in the Post-Standard.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law and Whitman School of Management, was interviewed on MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann (watch video clip) about excesses on Wall Street.

William Banks, Board of Advisors Distinguished Professor and director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism in the College of Law and the Maxwell School, is quoted in a WTOP-DC radio segment (listen to audio clip) about the Portland, Ore., terror attempt foiled by the FBI.

Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the College of Human Ecology, is quoted in a Los Angeles Times story about Tiger Woods one year after the accident which changed his life, image and brand.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Globe and Mail (Toronto) profile on Arianna Huffington; a WWJ-AM (Detroit) radio segment (listen to audio clip) on the passing of comedic actor Leslie Nielsen; and a Macleans (Canada) article on the economics of the upcoming royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Alice Sterling Honig, professor emerita of child development in the College of Human Ecology, was interviewed on explaining to children about TSA pat-downs for a Parenting article on holiday travel.

Amanda Nicholson, assistant professor of retail management in the Whitman School, is quoted in a Post-Standard story on Black Friday shopping and retail economic trends.
