An Associated Press article on a police officer from the border city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico who fled to the United States with his wife and children, includes statistics from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) about rates of application for and the granting of asylum.

Smart Planet, Clean Technica, Green Optimistic and Biofuels Watch reported on the wind turbine efficiency research led by L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS) graduate students Guannan Wang, Basman El Hadidi, Jakub Walczak; Mark Glauser, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and associate dean for research and doctoral programs in LCS; and Hiroshi Higuchi, LCS mechanical and aerospace engineering professor.

A Post-Standard story on the appointment of Rory McMahon as a Syracuse city court judge noted Beth Rougeux, associate vice president of government and community relations, as among the panelists who will seek a replacement for McMahon as the city’s aviation commissioner.

Students reacting to youth violence in the city are featured working on a mural in the SU Warehouse in a Post-Standard article. Art instructor Arthur Brangman, a staff member in the Department of African American Studies in The College of Arts and Sciences, is mentioned in the story. Students are working with artist Ricardo “Rico 23” Gouveia, who currently has a show at The Warehouse Gallery. The finished mural project will be displayed at the Community Folk Art Center (CFAC) and is a collaboration with CFAC, The Warehouse Gallery and SUArt Galleries along with the Creative Arts Academy and Daylight Blue Media.

Me’Shae Brooks-Rolling, senior operations manager in the Burton Blatt Institute, wrote a column in CNY Vision on frugality and financial freedom.

The Eagle Newspapers reported on the election of seven new members to the Near Westside Initiative board of directors.

FACULTY QUOTES

A McClatchy wire article quotes Eric Kingson, professor of social work in the College of Human Ecology’s School of Social Work, about a proposal that would raise Social Security taxes and lower benefits.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in an American Public Media “Marketplace” segment on the cable television industry.
