SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

A Dallas Morning News article on a Mexican police officer’s bid for asylum in the United States from Mexican drug cartel violence includes statistics from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) about rates of application for and the granting of asylum.

Research by Scott Nicholson, associate professor in the School of Information Studies, on board games in libraries is mentioned in a Library Journal article about gateway games for library patrons.

The L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science co-sponsorship of the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology’s “Bridges: Build ’em and Bust ’em” annual competition for high school students is noted in a Sunday Post-Standard story.

FACULTY QUOTES

Duncan Brown, assistant professor of physics in The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Discovery article about scientists simulating the collisions of black holes with extremely different masses. Brown is a member of the SU Gravitational Wave Group affiliated with the ground-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO).

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, appeared on ESPN‘s “Outside the Line” to discuss Kobe Bryant’s role in a commercial for the Call of Duty: Black Ops video game. Thompson also commented for a Washington WTOP radio segment (listen to audio clip) about the popularity of the “Glee” TV series and is quoted in an Agence France Presse article on full body scanners and pat-downs for air travelers.

Robert McClure, Chapple Family Professor of Citizenship and Democracy at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, commented on air for a CNY Central report (watch video clip) about the next steps in the tight electoral race between Anne Marie Buerkle and Dan Maffei.

A Post-Standard story about whether Dan Maffei would concede the election or ask for a recount referenced a blog entry by Grant Reeher, professor of political science in the Maxwell School, on repercussions for Maffei in future campaigns.
