SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Raleigh News & Observer, Charlotte Observer, Triangle Business Journal and WRAL reports say Cathryn Newton, College of Arts and Sciences dean emerita, is among finalists in the search for a new provost at North Carolina State University.

C-Span (watch video clip) covered a Washington, D.C., panel on improving college completion rates hosted by the College Board. Youlonda Copeland-Morgan, associate vice president for enrollment management, introduced the panel members.

A report on Rochester’s WHEC News 10 (watch video clip) features research led by Stephanie Ortigue, assistant professor of psychology in The College of Arts and Sciences.

The Post-Standard previewed the upcoming book signing at the Syracuse University Bookstore by Olympic speed skater Apolo Ohno.

SU is mentioned in an article in The Record (Bergen County, N.J.) about advanced placement courses and dual enrollment programs for high school students.

The Cornell-Syracuse South Asia Consortium is the focus of a Watertown Daily Times article about Afghanistan cultural outreach programs for Watertown and Fort Drum area high schools.

FACULTY QUOTES

Kristi Andersen, Chapple Family Professor of Citizenship and Democracy at the Maxwell School and professor of political science in The College of Arts and Sciences, contributed to a New York Times online discussion about politics in the mid-term election, addressing the gender gap and interest gap in voting.

Eric Kingson, professor of social work in the College of Human Ecology’s School of Social Work, co-authored an op-ed in The American Prospect about Social Security and the federal deficit.

A Salon.com article about the Pentagon and media coverage of WikiLeaks makes reference to a letter written by David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law and Whitman School of Management, which appears in PoynterOnline and defends former military reporter John Parker’s opinion about the lack of coverage on the leaks. Also, Johnston was interviewed Monday on the Internet radio show, “JobTalkAmerica,” about joblessness and disparities in personal income in America. A video link is available here.

Jeffrey Stonecash, professor of political science in the Maxwell School and College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Watertown Daily Times story on the Owens-Doheny race in the 23rd Congressional District of New York and in a YNN report about campaigns based on voter anger.

Hubert “Hub” Brown, associate dean for research, creativity, international initiatives and diversity in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Media Matters blog entry noting criticism for the ABC News invitation to Andrew Breitbart to participate in election night commentary and coverage. Breitbart posted the altered video tied to the firing of Shirley Sherrod, a former federal official.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a UPI story about public service announcements.
