Proceeds benefit Pan Am 103 Archives

A children’s book that explores the history and traditions of Syracuse University is now available through the SU Bookstore.

flipper“Flipper and Dipper and the Treasures of 6 Bird” (Syracuse University Press) was written and illustrated by Wendy Solomon Morton ’89 of Phoenix, Ariz. Morton was a close friend of Frederick “Sandy” Phillips, one of the 35 Syracuse University students who died in the bombing of Pan Am 103 on Dec. 21, 1988, over Lockerbie, Scotland.

As a way of remembering her friend, Morton visited the SU Archives (located on the sixth floor of Bird Library), which houses the Pan Am 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archive. Her visit inspired the creation of Flipper and Dipper, two adventurous puppies who explore the SU campus one spring day. The 40-page book contains stories and images of SU traditions as told by SU Archivist Ed Galvin.

In their travels, Flipper and Dipper hear about cows on campus, schoolbooks floating on rafts and snow banks taller than their heads. The story concludes with a thoughtful remembrance of those lives lost in the bombing of Pan Am 103.

“’Flipper and Dipper and the Treasures of 6 Bird’ is a wonderful way for alumni to remember their years on “The Hill,” and to share those years with their children and grandchildren,” says Galvin.

Proceeds from the sale of each book support Syracuse University Archives in preserving the legacies of the men, women and children whose lives were lost in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. The Pan Am 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archive is the only archive in the world dedicated to all 270 victims of the tragedy.

The book can be ordered online at the SU Bookstore. The soft-cover book also comes with Flipper and Dipper’s plush new friend, Toni. Free shipping is available for this book.

More information on the SU Archives and Pan Am 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archive can be found at http://archives.syr.edu/panam .
