Artist Edgar Jerins, who is known for his large-scale portraits, will present a lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m. in Shemin Auditorium in the Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer Art Building. The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Art in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ (VPA) School of Art and Design.
Jerins works in charcoal to create realist images of people in domestic settings. Using dramatic lighting that falls on painstakingly rendered details, his subjects appear alienated and alone, even as they sit together. Violence is present throughout many of his images, with guns appearing in much of his work. Family ties appear frail or dysfunctional, plagued by disinterest, hostility and despair.
Jerins studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, the George Sugarman Foundation Grant and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. His work has been shown at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, N.Y., the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, as well as in numerous gallery shows.
