SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Data from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) is mentioned in a Law.com article about asylum seekers and legal representation; a CBS News (Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas) story on deportation cases involving noncitizens with pending visa applications; and a San Diego Union-Tribune article about the rates at which federal immigration judges deny asylum requests. TRAC statistics are also mentioned in a Forbes.com blog entry about Internal Revenue Service audits of small businesses.

Continuing coverage of the Near Westside Initiative (NWSI) and Connective Corridor project “A Love Letter to Syracuse,” includes a generously-illustrated feature story on Fast Company‘s design business website, a Post-Standard Dick Case column, WSYR-TV report and a second feature in Eagle Newspapers. Maarten Jacobs, NWSI director, is quoted.

The Greater Binghamton Business Journal reported on a technology competition sponsored by the School of Information Studies (iSchool) and Major League Baseball to solve technology- and sports-oriented problems.

In a review of the Everson Museum of Art ” Designed to Scale ” exhibition, the Post-Standard Stars magazine noted that new work by Cas Holman, assistant professor in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, is included in the show.

Whitman School of Management Dean Melvin T. Stith is featured in a Diverse Issues in Higher Education article on the PhD Project and diversity among business school deans. A link to the e-magazine is available here.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted on video cell phone technology in a New York Times story about the citizen video of fans brawling at Arthur Ashe stadium during the U.S. Open, and in a MarketWatch media report for Labor Day on the top 10 working-class TV series. Thompson also commented briefly for a Cleveland Plain Dealer story on how the war in Iraq is reflected in popular culture in America.

Chancellor Emeritus and University Professor Kenneth Shaw is quoted in a Chronicle of Higher Education article about tone, topics and audiences for annual state-of-the-university speeches.

Carol Dwyer, director of the Community Benchmarks Program in the Maxwell School, is quoted in an Inside Higher Ed story about alliances between the Wikimedia Foundation and academe to introduce creation and editing of Wikipedia entries into coursework for students.

Ross Rubenstein, associate professor of public administration in the Maxwell School, is quoted in an Austin-American Statesman story on Texas lottery games and surveys examining lottery player demographics.
