SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Syracuse University Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) statistics are cited in Center for Investigative Reporting, Immigration Chronicles and Washington Independent blog postings about the rate of federal immigration prosecutions and backlogs in immigration courts.

SU is mentioned in a Reuters story on colleges and universities using student-oriented social media including Foursquare and other applications with an eye toward improved enrollment and retention.

A study by Kalena Cortes, assistant professor in the School of Education, is cited in a Houston Chronicle article on changing property values in Texas apparently driven by parents moving into lower performing districts for their children’s advantage of higher performance rankings in high school. The Texas race-neutral diversity program for state universities accepts the top 10 percent of high school graduates into the state university of their choice.

WSYR-AM and Y94-FM news reports briefly noted this morning’s arrival of six Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicles at the SyracuseCoE. SU, a project partner, was mentioned.

Annoucement of 2010 Syracuse Symposium “Conflict: Peace and War” events is featured in today’s Post-Standard.

A photo of Seth Gitner, assistant professor of newspaper and online journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, accompanies a Post-Standard story about the multimedia class project on area diners compiled by SU journalism students.

The Ithaca Journal briefly notes the South Asia Center in the Maxwell School as a partner in the Rosamond Gifford Zoo’s annual celebration of Asian elephants.

FACULTY QUOTES

Harriet Brown, assistant professor of magazine journalism at the Newhouse School, was interviewed for a Jezebel article on her new book and the concept of family-based therapy as a treatment for eating disorders.

Gerald Grant, Hannah Hammond Professor of Education and Sociology Emeritus in the School of Education, is quoted in a Muskegon Chronicle about school consolidation.

Tazim Kassam, associate professor of religion in The College of Arts and Sciences, commented on religious freedom for a CNY Central report on local reaction to the controversy over a proposed mosque in lower Manhattan.

Jianshun Zhang, professor in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, is quoted in a Consumer Reports review of air purifiers.
