SU in the News: Tuesday, May 18

SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Artist Marion Wilson, director of community initiatives in the visual arts at the School of Education; her art and architecture students in the “Social Sculpture: 601 Tully” class; and Fowler high school students are featured in a Post-Standard article about the design, conversion and reconstruction of a vacant property near Blodgett School into a community storefront. The Near Westside Initiative and Mobile Literacy Arts Bus are also mentioned.

The Guardian (UK), Herald Sun (Australia), New York Magazine and the New York Post reported on Sunday’s commencement address by JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon at Syracuse University’s 156th Commencement.

Today’s Post-Standard column by Dick Case focused on the “Syracuse’s 15th Ward and Beyond” documentary premiering this weekend at Syracuse Stage, which showcases memories of the people and places of the 15th Ward. The article also mentions SU’s South Side Initiative.

The Post-Standard “Green Central New York” section noted that SU is included among the seven area colleges and schools listed in the Princeton Review “Guide to 286 Green Colleges” (second item).

The SyracuseCoE is mentioned in a Post-Standard story as partner in the creation and operation of new NYSERDA testing and research centers for solar photovoltaic and small wind energy technologies.

SU is mentioned in a Post-Standard story about earmark requests benefiting local nonprofits and corporations.

Paul Hirsch, research assistant professor in public administration in the Maxwell School, is mentioned in a Huffington Post story about philosophers Jeremy Bendik-Keymer and Allen Thompson and their concerns about multiple environmental crises.

FACULTY QUOTES

David R. George, director of Syracuse University Food Services, was interviewed by FoodService Director magazine about SU’s work with the Healthy Monday initiative on Meatless Monday offerings in student dining centers.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Detroit News article on the relationship between police departments and reality TV shows, referencing the death of a child during the filming of an episode of “The First 48.” Thompson is also quoted in a CNN story about the programming lineup for fall in NBC’s 10 p.m. timeslot.

Mark Obbie, associate professor of magazine, newspaper and online journalism in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a Newspaper.com article about Redflex Traffic Systems and the Arizona Republic newspaper, involving the journalistic ethics of a reporter hired as a Redflex spokesperson then rehired by the newspaper.
