Andria Costello Staniec, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering in Syracuse University’s L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS), has been named the college’s first associate dean for student affairs, effective June 1.

In her new role, Costello Staniec will be responsible for student success and retention programs; career services, including co-ops, internships and full-time employment; and will represent the college in matters pertaining to student affairs in interactions with various departments across the University and on University-wide committees.

“Dr. Costello Staniec brings great skills to this position,” says LCS Dean Laura J. Steinberg. “As a member of the CIE department, she has been an exemplary mentor and advisor, and she has played a leading role in the Women in Science and Engineering Learning Community. As associate dean for student affairs, Dr. Costello Staniec will work with the college’s staff and faculty to ensure that our students have the most rewarding and productive experiences possible. I cannot think of a better person to hold this position than Dr. Costello Staniec.”

Costello Staniec joined the LCS faculty in 1999. She holds a bachelor’s degree in applied biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and master’s and Ph. D. degrees in environmental engineering science from the California Institute of Technology. She was awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2001 for her work with methane oxidizing bacteria in the Adirondacks. Her teaching and research interests focus on applied environmental microbiology.

Costello Staniec is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors.
