SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Statistics from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) on tax audit rates are cited by ABC News and New York Times, Forbes , Atlantic and Business Insider articles noting the Internal Revenue Service spent less time auditing tax returns from large corporations than from medium- and small-sized businesses. TRAC statistics were also cited in Columbus Dispatch and Associated Press articles on changes to income levels in Ohio’s Appalachian counties.

Sunday’s Post-Standard featured an interview with University Lecture speaker and founder of the Children’s Defense Fund, Marian Wright Edelman.

House Ways and Means subcommittee testimony given by Leonard Burman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, is mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article on possible changes in tax policy, value-added taxes and the federal budget.

The Post-Standard reported on a U.S. Department of Energy grant to SU to develop college-level programs in smart grid technology for engineers and utility workers. L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science Dean Laura J. Steinberg and Chilukuri Mohan, professor and chair of the LCS department of electrical engineering and computer science, were mentioned in the article.

SU’s Connective Corridor project and Marilyn Higgins, vice president for community engagement and economic impact, are mentioned in a Post-Standard story on a redesign of Forman Park.

Tonight’s SU campus screening of the film “Were the House Still Standing” was noted in a Sunday Post-Standard story on the Syracuse Jewish Federation’s memorial observance of the Holocaust.

A Post-Standard story on the University’s new rain garden featured a photo of students and volunteers working on the installation. Rachel May, director of SU’s Office of Environment and Society, is quoted.

FACULTY QUOTES

Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the College of Human Ecology, is quoted in an Associated Press story on parodies of the recent Tiger Woods ad featuring the voice of his father.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, appeared on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” (view clip) discussing Tiger Woods and Nike, and is quoted in a Reuters story on golf audience viewership during Woods’ comeback at the Masters tournament. Thompson is also quoted in a USA Today article about fast food served by carhops on roller skates and a New York Times story about the rise in median age of Jay Leno’s viewership.

LaVonda Reed-Huff, associate professor in the College of Law, is quoted in a St. Petersburg Times article on minority-owned radio stations.

A Post-Standard story on the death of the Polish president and others in a plane crash quoted Tomasz Skwarnicki, physics professor in The College of Arts and Sciences.

David Van Slyke, associate professor of public administration in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a Post-Standard article on the administration of the Mercy Flight Central rescue helicopter service.

Thomas Dennison, professor of practice in public administration in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a Post-Standard article on the turnaround of Auburn Hospital after bankruptcy.

Edward Russell, assistant professor of advertising in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a Post-Standard story on the cost of Onondaga Community College’s new signage.
