SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Continuing coverage of fruit fly insemination and fertilization research by Scott Pitnick, professor of biology in The College of Arts and Sciences, included articles on the BioNews genetics web site and reports in Science 360, AOL News and on the IndyPosted blog.

The Denver Post and Watertown Daily Times mentioned Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) in opinion pieces about immigration case backlogs in Colorado and open government, respectively.

WRAL (Raleigh, N.C.) reported on a recent local forum focusing on the future of Wake County public schools. Gerald Grant, Hannah Hammond Professor of Education and Sociology Emeritus in the School of Education, presented on the challenges of high-poverty schools. Some Wake County school board members are calling for a plan for Community Assignment Zones for students and an end to busing for diversity.

The Lost Boys of Sudan, including SU student John Bul Dau, were featured in a Sunday Post-Standard article about their efforts to help rebuild their villages.

Martin Headd, a painter in SU’s Physical Plant and former basketball player, is featured in a Bloomberg News column. Jim Boeheim, SU men’s head basketball coach, and Danny Schayes, NBA player and Headd’s former teammate, are quoted. Ellen King, executive director of alumni relations, and Kay Farrell, manager in SU’s Housekeeping and Food Services, are also quoted.

A drawing by Donalee Peden Wesley, instructor in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), accompanies the Post-Standard Stars magazine review of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute’s “62nd Annnual Exhibition of Central New York Artists.” Also mentioned in the review are VPA faculty members Susan D’Amato, Yvonne Buchanan, Mary Giehl; and alumni Brenda Edwards and Susan Stoops, the show’s curator.

The Post-Standard reviewed the Syracuse Stage presentation of “Almost, Maine” and the SU Department of Drama production of “Room Service.”

The Connective Corridor bus service is mentioned in a Post-Standard story on the NCAA East Regional tournament being held on campus this week.

FACULTY QUOTES

David M. Crane L’80, professor of practice in the College of Law, is quoted in a BBC story about whether “The Ghost,” a film about efforts to try a former British prime minister before the International Criminal Court, could happen in real life.

Mehrzad Boroujerdi, director of the Middle Eastern Studies Program in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor article on Iranian diplomacy.

Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the College of Human Ecology, is quoted in an Associated Press story on Tiger Woods’ return to golf and the sponsors who kept and dropped him.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in Star-Ledger and New York Post stories about New Jersey as a reality TV destination, with its proximity to New York City; and in New York Daily News articles on Tiger Woods’ recent interview and Kate Gosselin’s upcoming appearance on “Dancing with the Stars.”
