Organist Ahreum Han will present a Rising Star Recital in Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel on Sunday, March 7, as part of the Esther Drake and John Vincent Malmgren Concert Series.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Irving Garage.

Han will perform pieces by Mendelssohn, Karg-Elert, Bach, Vierne and Liszt.

A native of South Korea, Han immigrated to the United States as a teenager. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in organ performance from Westminster Choir College and graduated with an artist’s diploma from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music.

She has received top prizes from numerous competitions, including the undergraduate division of the Westminster Choir College Scholarship Competition, the Charlotte Hoyt Bagnall Scholarship Competition, the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) National Young Artist Performance Competition, the John Rodland Memorial Church Music Scholarship Competition, the Albert Schweitzer Organ Competition, the Carlean Neihart Organ Competition and the West Chester University Organ Competition. Her live performance concerts were featured on the radio show “PIPEDREAMS” from American Public Media.

Han is active as an organ soloist and has performed at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City, Trinity Church at Wall Street, St. Philip’s Cathedral in Atlanta, Jack Singer Hall in Calgary and the Princeton University Chapel. She was featured at the Young Virtuosi Festival in 2006. In 2007, she was a featured artist at the Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists. She performed in Germany and the United Kingdom in 2008. She has been a featured soloist at the White Mountain Musical Arts Annual Bach Festival in New Hampshire.

Last year, Han graduated with a master’s degree in organ performance from Yale School of Music and Yale Institute of Sacred Music. She is currently the organist at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Stamford, Conn.

The concert is part of the Malmgren Concert Series at Hendricks Chapel. The series was made possible by a generous gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren ’42 in 1991. The free concerts, held throughout the year, feature a wide variety of music.

The final scheduled performance in the 2009–10 Malmgren season will be international vocal ensemble Amarcord on Tuesday, March 23 (co-sponsored by SU’s Pulse Performing Arts Series).

Call Hendricks Chapel at 443-2901 for more information.
