Setnor School to present recital, master class by organist Andrew Scanlon Feb. 15-16

Andrew Scanlon, an instructor of organ and sacred music at East Carolina University (ECU), will present an organ recital Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 8 p.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College. The recital, which is free and open to the public, is presented by the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA). Parking is available in the Irving Garage.

Scanlon will also present a master class on hymn playing on Monday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Park Central Presbyterian Church, 504 E. Fayette St., Syracuse.

The recital will feature works by de Grigny, Buxtehude, Bach, Langlais and Messiaen.

A native of Methuen, Mass., Scanlon is a member of the keyboard faculty at ECU and is also the organist-choirmaster at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville, N.C. Prior to his appointment at ECU, he was a member of the organ faculty at Duquesne University, director of music at the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh and director of the Pittsburgh Compline Choir. He formerly held positions at St. Paul’s Cathedral (Buffalo, N.Y.), Christ & St. Stephen’s Church (New York City) and Marquand Chapel at Yale Divinity School.

As a recitalist, Scanlon maintains a busy concert schedule, performing throughout the United States as well as in Canada and Europe, including appearances at national conventions of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and the Organ Historical Society. He has been broadcast on NPR’s nationally syndicated radio program “Pipedreams” as well as on WQED-FM in Pittsburgh, WBFO-FM and WNED in Buffalo, and WCRB-FM in Boston, and he is featured on two OHS documentary recordings: “Historic Organs of Boston” and “Historic Organs of Buffalo.” Actively involved in the AGO, he holds the fellowship diploma and is a member of the National Board of Examiners in Professional Certification.

Scanlon earned a bachelor of music degree at Duquesne University and a master of music degree at Yale University, where his teachers were Ann Labounsky and Thomas Murray. Additional study was under John Skelton, John Walker and David Craighead.
