SU Office of Residence Life, Division of Student Affairs sponsor ‘I Have a Dream Week’ Jan. 24-29

Syracuse University’s Office of Residence Life and Division of Student Affairs will present the annual “I Have a Dream Week” Jan. 24-29 on the SU campus.

“This year’s theme is “Dream Out Loud.” All events are free and open to the SU and greater Syracuse communities. For more information, contact Michelle Singletary at 443-3637 or msinglet@syr.edu.  

The schedule includes:

  • Sunday, Jan. 24—The 25th Annual Martin Luther King Celebration program begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The keynote speaker is Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of PBS’ “Washington Week” and senior correspondent for “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.”
  • Monday, Jan. 25—A Candlelight Vigil and Gospel Celebration will be held at 7 p.m. on the Hendricks Chapel steps. Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to gather for a vigil to reflect on the legacy and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. Immediately following the vigil, the Black Celestial Choral Ensemble of Syracuse University will perform. This event is sponsored by the Residence Hall Association and the Office of Residence Life.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 26—The “Capturing the Dream” art display and book signing reception will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Panasci Lounge in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. This art display will feature the work of school children from Franklin Magnet, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Edward Smith elementary schools in Syracuse. The artists’ pieces will relate to the life, legacy and dream of King. London Ladd, illustrator of the children’s book “March On! The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World” by Christine King-Ferris, will be signing copies of this book. The first 25 students to arrive will receive a free copy of “March On!” A reception will follow.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 27—The documentary “Nigger,” directed by Thea St. Omer, will be shown at 7 p.m. in Maxwell Auditorium. “What’s in a word? Everything. Lest anyone think race need not be discussed and unpacked, see St. Omer’s documentary, ‘Nigger.’ St. Omer’s artistry shines light on every corner of a forbidden word. This film won’t let you stop talking about it. It entertains and provokes thoughtfulness. It casts a lens of remarkable people on art, history, culture and popular culture, politics, identity, ontology, and life. ‘Nigger’ is beautiful,” says Douglas Biklen, dean of the School of Education.
  • Thursday, Jan. 28—Poetry Night will be held in Watson Theater beginning at 7 p.m. Come listen or share your poetry with the Syracuse community. Performances by Verbal Blend, from the Office of Multicultural Affairs, will be part of this event.
  • Friday, Jan. 29—An MLK Campus Day of Service will be held at the Schine Student Center from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Members of the SU community are invited to participate. The event is sponsored by the Civic Engagement and Diversity committees of the Office of Residence Life. Also, a Performance Showcase will be held at 7 p.m. in the The Sky Barn on South Campus. This showcase will display the talents of various SU clubs/organizations and is a cultural exchange that will give performers the opportunity to express “the dream.” Free tickets are available at the Schine Box Office.
