SU Trustee Angel Collado-Schwarz looks at political future of Puerto Rico in Jan. 25 talk

Syracuse University Trustee Angel Collado-Schwarz ’74, who has achieved distinction as both a successful businessman and as a passionate promoter of knowledge about Caribbean history and culture, will give a free presentation on prospects of national sovereignty for Puerto Rico on Monday, Jan. 25, from 6-7:30 p.m. in Room 207 of the Hall of Languages. The talk will be delivered in Spanish with translations, answers and explanations offered in English as requested by those attending.

Collado-Schwarz, CEO of Badillo, Nazca, Saatchi and Saatchi, is chairman of the board of the University of Puerto Rico Press; a trustee of New York City’s Museo del Barrio; and a board member of the Barendoim Said Foundation. A doctoral candidate in Latin American history at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Collado-Schwarz hosts a weekly radio talk show that airs in Puerto Rico, New York City and Chicago, and heads the Puerto Rico-based Fundacion Voces del Centro, which promotes the knowledge of Caribbean history and culture.

His publications include “Soberanias Exitosas: Seis modelos para el desarrollo economico de Puerto Rico” (2009) and three volumes of “Voces de la cultura” (2006, 2007 and 2008). “Soberanias Exitosas,” which looks at six former colonial societies that have achieved economic prosperity since attaining their independence, is forthcoming in an English edition. The original Spanish edition will be available for purchase at the presentation.

The presentation is organized by La Casita Cultural Center with the support of SU’s Latino-Latin American Studies Program; the Spanish Program of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics; the Program on Latin America and the Caribbean (PLACA); the Office of Alumni Relations; University College; and the Lillian and Emanuel Slutzker Center for International Services.

La Casita Cultural Center is one of 19 Chancellor’s Leadership Projects that exemplify the University vision of Scholarship in Action. The center seeks to establish a physical gathering place on Syracuse’s Near Westside to foster multimodal, multigenerational campus-community conversations and to serve as an intellectual and artistic bridge linking various communities, including Latino populations across and beyond Syracuse. The project–whose board of advisors includes faculty, students and administrators from schools and colleges across the University–will work in partnership with a variety of community organizations and with institutional support from the Near Westside Initiative.
