SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The New York Times cited research from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) in an article about a rise in federal prosecutions in the last fiscal year along with a surge in immigration prosecutions. David Burnham, co-director of TRAC, is quoted. The Houston Chronicle and Commonweal also cited TRAC statistics in reporting on the rise in prosecutions. Crain’s New York Business referenced TRAC statistics in a story about a drop in federal prosecution of financial crimes.

A photo of yesterday’s University Service of Remembrance for those who died aboard Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland appeared in the Post-Standard. Other local and regional coverage included reports by CNY Central, WSYR-TV, News 10 Now and WHAM-ROC. Thomas Wolfe, senior vice president and dean of student affairs; Judy O’Rourke, director of undergraduate studies; and Lawrence Mason, professor of visual and interactive communications in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications are quoted.

AZoCleantech and Finance and Commerce reported SU as a partner in the consortium selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to study wind turbine performance for improvements in power generation.

Long Island Business News and Gov Monitor reports include SU in partnership working with the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on energy issues and resources for the New York Energy Policy Institute.

CNYlink reported on a multimedia storytelling club for Holy Cross Elementary School fifth-graders that is directed by Newhouse School graduate students Olga Zatepilina and Marti Collins.

FACULTY QUOTES

A Chronicle of Higher Education quote by Gary Pavela, director of the Academic Integrity Office, was referenced in an American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research article on preventing student suicides.

Mitch Franklin, assistant professor of accounting practice in the Whitman School of Management, is quoted in a Smart Money story on year-end handling of flexible spending accounts.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, is quoted in an MMA Fighting story about the decade’s growth in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the College of Human Ecology, is quoted in a Fox News report on the mixed martial arts ban on wearing Nazi-like clothing when competing.

Donald Siegel, earth sciences professor in The College of Arts and Sciences, commented in a Rochester Democrat & Chronicle story on Chinese food and eating out on Christmas Day.
