SU in the News: Monday, November 30

Mike Haynie, assistant professor of entrepreneurship in the Whitman School and founder of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV), was quoted in a Fox Business article on returning war veterans and small businesses. EBV graduates were also featured in a related Fox Small Business Center story.

Douglas Biklen, dean of the Syracuse University School of Education, was interviewed on CBC Radio‘s program “The Current” about the case of Rom Houben, the Belgian man who was in a coma for more than 20 years before doctors discovered his comprehension of those around him through neuro-imaging techniques. Biklen and the Facilitated Communication Institute at Syracuse University were also mentioned in a Global News Online article on Houben.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, was quoted in a Crain’s New York Business article on conservative publishers; in Bloomberg Radio stories on the Tiger Woods accident; and in Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor and Bloomberg Radio stories on the White House state dinner gate-crashers.

Local and national coverage on the death of two SU first-year architecture students included Associated Press, Newsday, Post-Standard, Utica Observer-Dispatch stories; reports by News 10 Now and WSYR-TV; and broadcasts by WABC and WNYW in New York and WMUR (Manchester, N.H.), WROC (Rochester, N.Y.) and WSYR-AM.

SU student Patrick Alvarez and his charity, Project Feed Me, hosting Thanksgiving dinners in Syracuse and New York were featured in New York Times, ABC News and Post-Standard stories.

Amanda Nicholson, assistant professor of retail management practice in the Whitman School, was quoted in Post-Standard and WSYR-AM reports on retailers, shopping and Internet purchases.

Patricia Longstaff, professor of television, radio and film at the Newhouse School, was quoted in a WSYR-TV story on a Time Warner cable campaign for customer feedback on rate increase options versus cable show availability.

Damani Musgrave, data systems administrator at SU, was quoted in a Post-Standard story on a robotics class for city school students addressing the digital divide between urban and suburban students. Several SU students also participate in the Mercy Works Inc. “iCAN” project.

The Post-Standard Stars magazine reviewed the Alyson Shotz exhibition at the Warehouse Gallery.
