Federico Subervi, professor at Texas State University-San Marcos’ School of Journalism and Mass Communication and director of its Center for the Study of Latino Media & Markets, will visit Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications on Thursday, Nov. 19. He will speak on “Latinos, Media and Politics” at 6 p.m. in the Halmi Screening Room, Room 141 of Newhouse 3. His talk is free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
Subervi is an expert in a broad range of issues related to mass media and ethnic minorities, especially Latinos in the United States. He is the editor of “The Mass Media and Latino Politics: Studies of Media Content, Campaign Strategies and Survey Research: 1984-2004” (Routledge, 2008).
He is currently the principal investigator on a research project, funded by the McCormick Foundation, focusing on the practices and policies of Texas and Illinois for communicating with non-English-speaking populations during emergency situations. From 2006-08, he directed two research projects—one funded by the Ford Foundation, the other by the Social Science Research Council—that analyzed the diversity of Latino-oriented media in Central Texas.
Subervi directs the Latinos and Media Project, which is dedicated to the dissemination of research and resources pertaining to Latinos and the media, and was founding chair of the board of directors of Latinitas Inc., an organization and Web-based magazine for Latina adolescents and teens.
Subervi has held academic appointments at the University of California-Santa Barbara and the University of Texas at Austin. He has served as the UNESCO professor at the Universidade Metodista de São Paulo; and as a visiting professor at Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, Germany; the Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile; and the University of Amsterdam. He serves on the editorial boards of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly; Journalism & Communication Monographs; and The Howard Journal of Communications.
Subervi volunteers for the National Research Council’s Ford Foundation Fellowship Program and has served as an advisor or consultant for Scholastic Entertainment’s animated series “The Misadventures of Maya and Miguel”; the National Association of Hispanic Journalists; the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; the Preview Forum; the Round Table Group; the Spanish Broadcasting System; Mothers Against Drunk Driving; Nickelodeon (“Dora the Explorer”); and Fox Family Worldwide (Boyz & Girlz Channels).
At the Newhouse School, he will also speak to a class and present a research colloquium and a proseminar.
