Poister Organ Competition winner to perform Oct. 20 at SU

Tom Sheehan, first-prize winner of the 2009 Arthur Poister Organ Competition, will present an organ recital Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College. The recital, which is free and open to the public, is presented by the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the Syracuse chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO). Free parking is available in the Irving Garage.

Sheehan will perform on Setnor Auditorium’s historic 1950 Holtkamp organ, which was built by Walter Holtkamp in collaboration with Poister, an acclaimed organist and faculty member at SU.

Sheehan is a senior organ performance major at Westminster Choir College and is studying with Ken Cowan. He accompanied the Westminster Chapel Choir and the Westminster Schola Cantorum and performed with them in all of their concerts. He is also an organ scholar at Trinity Church in Princeton, N.J., where he works with Tom Whittemore. He toured England with the Trinity Church choir, performing at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London; Blackburn Cathedral, Blackburn; St. John’s Chapel, Cambridge; and other prestigious locations. He has also accompanied the Trinity Church choir in such locations as Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and New York’s Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Most recently he took first place in the AGO Regional Competition for the Mid-Atlantic Region (Region III).
