SU honorary degree nominations sought by Oct. 5

The Syracuse University Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees has invited all students, faculty, staff and alumni to nominate candidates to receive honorary degrees at the 2010 and 2011 Commencement ceremonies. Deadline for all nominations is Oct. 5.

Those who wish to nominate a candidate should complete a nomination form, available online at http://universitysenate.syr.edu/honorary/NominationForm.pdf, and attach requested materials that outline the nominee’s qualifications for the honorary degree. A copy of the nominee’s vita or résumé, or a list of the candidate’s professional history and contributions must be included. Include additional information, with at least two letters of support, and writings that attest to the eminence of the candidate. Please note that if one of the support letters is not from the dean of the relevant school or college, the dean will be consulted about the nomination. Nominators should strive for brevity in preparing nomination materials. Each nomination should be limited to eight pages, excluding résumé or CV.

The Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees will review all nominations and recommend final candidates to the full Senate, which will make the final decision. If feasible for the candidate and appropriate for the program area, honorary degree recipients will be invited to present colloquia on Friday of Commencement Weekend.

Nominations should be submitted to Arthur D. Jensen, chair of the Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees and an associate dean in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, by mail at 205 Crouse College. More information is available online at http://universitysenate.syr.edu/honorary/honorary.html or by contacting Jensen at 443-5890 or adjensen@syr.edu.
