SU in the News: Monday, August 17, 2009

Research by Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) was cited in a Tampa Tribune article on the deportation hearing of Youssef Megahed, an Egyptian immigrant and former student at the University of South Florida who was recently cleared of federal explosives charges.

SU was mentioned in several United Kingdom news reports on the possible compassionate release of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, including the Financial Times, Telegraph, Mirror, Herald, Scotsman, Telegram and Press Association. The New Yorker, Newsday, Philadelphia Inquirer, Worcester Telegram and WSYR-TV also mentioned the University in reports on the topic.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, was quoted in Australian Broadcasting Company, Ventura County Star, Press of Atlantic City and Register-Guard (Eugene, Ore.) stories on memories of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969. He was also quoted in a St. Petersburg Times story on the television drama “Mad Men.”

Materials from the SU Library’s Special Collections Research Center were featured in a CBS News Sunday Morning Show story on conjoined twins Chang and Eng, and in a WNYC Leonard Lopate Show on the 70th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz.” An audio link is available here.

The College of Law’s participation in evaluating Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s written work as part of the American Bar Association’s vetting of Sotomayor’s qualifications to be a U.S. Supreme Court justice was mentioned in The Faculty Lounge blog.

Michael Morris, chief executive officer of the Burton Blatt Institute, was quoted in a WRVO news story on BBI’s U.S. Department of Education-funded research to increase employment for individuals with disabilities.

Whitman School of Management Dean Melvin T. Stith was quoted in a Post-Standard article on the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities.
