Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications today presented six awards at the third annual Mirror Awards luncheon honoring excellence in media industry reporting. The event, emceed by MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer ’96, was held at the Harmonie Club in New York City.
The winners, chosen by a group of journalists and journalism educators, are:
· Best Single Article, Traditional Media: Seth Mnookin, “Bloomberg Without Bloomberg” (Vanity Fair)
· Best Single Article, Digital Media: David Kamp, “Requiem for a Micro-celebrity” (Vanity Fair)
· Best Profile, Traditional Media: Ian Parker, “The Bright Side” (The New Yorker)
· Best Commentary, Traditional Media: David Carr (The New York Times)
· Best Commentary, Digital Media: Clive Thompson (Wired.com)
Chris Ahearn, president of Reuters Media at Thomson Reuters, and Margaret Carlson, political columnist for Bloomberg News and Washington editor of The Week magazine, presented the awards.
In addition, the school honored Huffington Post Editor in Chief Arianna Huffington with the Fred Dressler Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the Obama for America New Media Department/Blue State Digital with the i-3 award for impact, innovation and influence. Nora Ephron, acclaimed essayist, novelist, screenwriter and director, presented the Lifetime Achievement Award. The i-3 award was presented by Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and founder and current consultant with Democracy for America, and accepted by Joe Rospars, a founding partner with Blue State Digital, who served as director of new media for the Obama campaign.
The Mirror Awards, established by the Newhouse School in 2006, honor the reporters, editors and teams of writers who hold a mirror to their own industry for the public’s benefit. Honorees are recognized for news judgment and command of craft in reporting, analysis and commentary on developments in the media industry and its role in our economy, culture and democracy. This year’s competition drew more than 170 entries.
