Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, College of Visual and Performing Arts to present third annual fashion communications fashion showMarch 30, 2009Wendy S. Loughlinwsloughl@syr.edu

Students from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) will present the fashion show “The Revolution is Now!: Media in a time of utter transformation expressed through fashion” on Friday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in the Newhouse 1 Lobby. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Parking is available in SU pay lots.

The show is co-sponsored by Newhouse and VPA’s Fashion Communications Milestone, and produced by VPA’s fashion design program. The show will feature more than 100 designs from fashion design students.

“The show is the only opportunity to see the work of freshmen, sophomores and juniors on the runway, and a great opportunity to preview the senior collections,” says Jeffrey Mayer, associate professor of fashion and design technology in VPA.

“The media industry is literally being rocked by change, as evidenced by the number of major newspapers that have folded in just the last couple of months, not to mention the boon in new media options,” says Carla Lloyd, associate dean in the Newhouse School and co-director of the milestone.”As with our last two shows, the title of this year’s show is focused on the media, which reinforces the important union that exists between Newhouse and VPA through the milestone.”

The Fashion Communications Milestone is a concentration that explores fashion and beauty as communication. Course work, which is drawn from both Newhouse and VPA, covers such topics as the history of fashion; contemporary fashion in popular culture; visual communications; fashion advertising and promotion; fashion photography; beauty and fashion journalism; and other topics. The milestone is open to students in Newhouse or in VPA’s fashion design program.

For more information about the fashion show or the milestone, contact Mylinda Smith at (315) 443-9252 or msmith@syr.edu.
