Students and the general public alike are encouraged to participate in Syracuse University’s annual cancer fundraiser, Relay For Life, March 28-29, held at the Carrier Dome. Relay For Life, a 23-year-old event that both promotes cancer awareness and benefits cancer research through the American Cancer Society, will start at 6 p.m. on March 28 and conclude at 6 a.m. on March 29. Teams will take turns sending at least one member at all times to walk on the track while a variety of fundraisers around the track keep other members occupied.

Eileen Barch, the president of Phi Sigma Pi Honors Fraternity, comments, “I think it is a great way for us college folk to do something positive that affects so many people. It is a great way to come together and recognize, remember and inspire.” Relay For Life is one of the unique events that gives students and community members a chance to interact with one another in an extended setting. As well as the opportunity to walk around the track and meet with fellow cancer survivors or other people touched by cancer in some form, Relay participants can witness the Luminaria Ceremony, which commemorates those struggling against cancer and those lost to cancer.

Last year’s Relay For Life at SU raised a record of more than $150,000, and participants hope for this year to follow a similar trend. Online registration is now closed, but those that want to attend Relay can register at the Dome on Saturday night for a $20 registration fee at the door.

Each team captain must turn in money and pick up the bracelets needed for entry into the Dome on Bank Night. This will be held between 7-10:30 p.m. on March 25 at Kittredge Auditorium in Huntington Beard Crouse Hall.
