As part of Syracuse University’s participation in NBC Universal’s Green Week (Nov. 16-23), SU students were invited to enter a 30-second video spot on an important green message for a contest that resulted in one spot appearing on the NBC Sports website.

In conjunction with SU’s Sustainability Division, two SU student entries were submitted, and one is currently available on the website. The chosen video, “Go Green,” created by Kelsey Higgs, a senior advertising design major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and Ryan Kelly, a senior majoring in television, radio and film in the Newhouse School, can be viewed at http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/27829411, as well as on SU’s sustainability site at http://www.greenuniversecity.syr.edu/StudentGreenBeat.html.

The second SU entry, “Greeks Go Green,” was submitted by students Natalie Clay, Joanna Rozansky and Jaz Moore.

Higgs and Kelly have been friends since their first year. When Higgs heard about this opportunity, she told Kelly. With Higgs’ expertise in advertising and Kelly’s skill with video and editing, both were eager to make their video, seeing the contest as an opportunity to gain experience and add to their portfolios.

Kelly expressed an additional reason for making the video: “I thought it sounded like a great idea because it was a great way to gain exposure-in addition to promoting a really good cause,” he says. “I am a firm believer in keeping not only the University but our planet as green as it can be, and I hope that people everywhere will take initiative, as even the smallest effort helps us reach the big goal.”
