College of Visual and Performing Arts opens Hot Shop in downtown SyracuseFebruary 18, 2009Erica Blustesblust@syr.edu

Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) is opening a new venue in downtown Syracuse to showcase the work of its students, faculty, alumni and visiting artists.

The Hot Shop, located at 307-313 S. Clinton St., will serve as a flexible space for exhibitions and other curriculum-related activity of the college’s five areas: the School of Art and Design; the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies; the Department of Drama; the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music; and the Department of Transmedia. A committee of VPA faculty representatives will coordinate the use of the space.

“Our college is incredibly active and innovative, and we’re always eager to share our work with the world,” says Ann Clarke, dean of VPA. “The Hot Shop offers us an additional opportunity to do that and further contribute to the cultural life of our community.”

VPA will inaugurate the Hot Shop with “Selections,” an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Ludwig Stein, professor of painting and chair of the School of Art and Design’s Department of Art. The show, which is free and open to the public, will be on view Feb. 28-March 21, with an opening reception Saturday, Feb. 28, from 5-8 p.m. Regular exhibition hours are Wednesday-Sunday, 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

The college also plans to use the space this spring for exhibitions of work by bachelor of fine arts degree candidates in the School of Art and Design. The school hopes to use the space in the fall for a group faculty show and a group graduate student show. For more information, contact Andrew Havenhand, VPA program exhibitions coordinator, at (315) 474-1217 or ahavenhand@yahoo.com.

VPA is committed to the education of cultural leaders who will engage and inspire audiences through performance, visual art, design, scholarship and commentary. The college provides the tools for self-discovery and risk-taking in an environment that thrives on critical thought and action. Learn more at http://vpa.syr.edu.
